Edmonton teens apprehended in Meadow Lake drug bust

On Thursday, January 28, the Meadow Lake RCMP detachment acted on information that three male youths were selling crack cocaine from a local business in the city.

The youths, from Edmonton and aged 17, 17, and 14, were located at the business and apprehended after a brief foot chase. The chase ended without injury to the officers, youths or public.

The youths were in possession of a handgun, which they attempted to throw away during the chase. The gun was located after an exhaustive search of downtown Meadow Lake, and is thought to be the same weapon used in the January 11 shooting that occurred in the city.

The RCMP recovered a substantial amount of cash and approximately two ounces of crack cocaine with an estimated street value of over $9,000 from the youths. The youths are remanded into police custody and made their first appearance in provincial court on Monday, February 1.

Relatives say Canoe Lake child killed by dogs

At approximately 11:25 a.m. on January 30, Canoe Lake RCMP received a call regarding a deceased youth located in a yard on the Canoe Lake First Nation. Deceased is a 10 year old First Nation male from the Canoe Lake First Nation.

Police said investigation had revealed no signs of foul play and the investigation is continuing.

The RCMP confirmed that the deceased youth is Keith Iron of Canoe Lake. Canoe Lake RCMP also confirmed that the initial investigation determined that there were three dogs disturbing the body of the deceased upon discovery however the cause of death was being investigated by the Coroner's Office.

According to media reports the boy's uncle, Lawrence Iron, told CBC that Keith was attacked by dogs while he was walking to his cousin's house, the same walk his nephew made every morning.

In a press conference in Saskatoon on February 1, Canoe Lake Chief Guy Lariviere said the leadership felt responsible for the tragedy.

La Loche men turn themselves in on drug charges

On January 21 members of the La Loche RCMP, along with members from the Prince Albert Integrated Street Enforcement Team and Saskatoon Border Integrity, executed two search warrants in the Northern Village of La Loche.

As a result of the search warrants the RCMP have charged two males for trafficking cocaine and possessing property obtained by crime. A female is also facing charges of illegally possessing and selling non-stamped tobacco.

Two warrants were obtained January 27 for Desi Dale Herman (1977-04-23) and Pierson Robert Piche (1969-05-04) both of the La Loche district who are well known within the community.

On January 28 the accuseds in our investigation, Herman and Piche, turned themselves in at the La Loche RCMP detachment. Herman was remanded in custody and appeared before a Judge on Monday, February 1.

Piche was released on an undertaking with strict conditions and was given a first appearance of Monday, April 12.
